How to plant jasmine

Plant aspotted vines
Soil temperature60°F or warmer
DepthSame depth as the pot
Spacing3–8 ft
LightFull sun to part shade
Time to bloom1–2 years
HardinessPerennial in zones 7–10

Star jasmine (Trachelospermum) is hardy in zones 8–10; common jasmine in zones 7–10.

Plant against a trellis or fence for support.

In colder zones grow jasmine in a pot and bring it indoors.

Star jasmine is evergreen and fragrant in late spring; winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) blooms yellow in late winter but has no scent.

Tie young stems to their support until the vine starts twining on its own.

Feed lightly in spring; too much nitrogen gives leaves instead of flowers.

When to expect flowers from jasmine

Most jasmines bloom spring to summer; prune right after flowering.
